Healthy Snacks

Since I started working out again, I've been in dire need of food like all the time. I'm normally starving by lunch and have eaten all of my snacks by then. What am I supposed to do after lunch? Oh and my husband takes a huge lunch and somehow eats it all and is still hungry. I'm looking for some healthy snack ideas other than the typical ones (yogurt, fruit, veggies, nuts, string cheese, jerky, whole grain crackers) to keep from taking an entire box of crackers or bag of carrots. I want things that are simple to make or that I can just throw in a Ziploc bag and in my lunch box.

So here's where you come in. What are your favorite healthy snacks? What do you eat to keep yourself from starving throughout the day?

My husband loves hummus and pita bread and I think it's pretty filling. I am not a big hummus fan, but I do like pita bread and peanut butter, even though it's probably not quite as healthy.

When I really want something sweet, yet I am trying to eat healthy, I sometimes mix a few M&M's in with a nut mix.

Half of a turkey sandwich with lots of lettuce and maybe a little lite ranch dressing on wheat bread is also really good and really filling.

And Fiber One bars are sweet and filling (especially with some fruit), although they do contain High Fructose Corn Syrup.

If I want more a voluminous snack I make light popcorn the night before and split it into a few baggies. I really like stale popcorn, too, so sometimes I leave it open over night before bagging it up.

But other than the typical snacks, I do not have many ideas..

Peanuts are always a good option. They have protein, so a few handfuls and you'll feel full.

Popcorn is good, too. And even a bowl of oatmeal.

(Ok, so now I'm getting hungry... ;)

Keep up the good work on running and all! For snacks at work, I usually bring a banana for mid morning and then in the afternoon it varies...applesauce in a container, Trader Joe's no salt pretzels w/ pb inside, nf yogurt, almonds, carrots and hummus, etc.

my afternoon snack is 2 sticks of light string cheese and a granola bar.low on calories, and satisifies my snacky craving!

This isn't really a snack... but lots of times right after lunch I'm still hungry and also in the mood for something sweet. A piece of gum (trident blueberry) gives me that little kick of sweet as well as holding me over until I start to actually feel full from my lunch. Then I can go a couple more hours until my next snack :)

I get bored with yogurt too - adding in a little granola helps give it a kick.

Cottage Cheese and fruit is always my mid morning snack.

I need to think of some more healthy work snacks too!

Try to grab some extra fresh fruit to take back to your room next time you’re at a meal. Apples seem to last a little longer than, say, peaches…but it all depends on your preference. Bananas are filling, apples have great crunch, and oranges improve your mood. Fruit is a great pick me up between class and you can grab one of them on your way out the door.
